William of Normandy, the future conqueror of England, is a small and fragile human being at the beginning of the film. He will slowly become conscious of his origins and the faith that lays before him. For him, the fact of becoming an adult is linked to his first conquest : his title of Duke of Normandy.
Osbern
« Foster father » of William after the death of Duke Robert, his only goal is to keep William alive until he can be strong enough to be in charge of his destiny. He shares his experience of fighting with young William. Osbern is highly influenced by the scandinavian culture and reminds young William of his roots.
Renouf
Instigator of William's troubles, Renouf knows that he will not be able to take his place, but hopes to put a puppet duke on the throne who will obey him. He chooses young Gui de Brionne, whom he kidnaps under the eyes of his uncle.
Hel
Enigmatic figure, Hel is the incarnation of the scandinavian culture. She makes a ghostly appearance at the beginning of the movie. She helps Osbern and William when they escape through the Norman land without mishap. Hel is also an allegory of death. She is the goddess of the deads in the Nordic mythology. She leads the dead spirits, in particular those who had a « deathof straw », ie a natural death in their bed, towards their vessel to follow the current of one of the twelve rivers, the Elivagar, one of which comes out in the country of Gimlé.
The monk
Christian supervisor of William, he seems to have played this role when William was very young. He was there at the eve of embarking for England, and had a certain although incomplete influence on the Duke.
Wilhelm Fitz Osbern Young/ Marco Tomazzolli
Son of Osbern, his role becomes all the more important when his master the duke William takes his destiny in hand. His bravery and his courage will be crucial during the Val dès Dunes battle.
Gilbert de Brionne
Regent after duke Robert's death, he tries as best he can to calm the frustration of the norman barons who want to see William eliminated.
Gui de Brionne
Heir of the throne of Burgundy, it seems that the hopes of the exchequer to replace William rest on him. His presence will motivate the Frank king to ally to William. Indeed, the king frowns upon the possibility that a duke gathering Burgundy and Normandy live in his kingdom.
